We’ve assembled here a list of some of the coverage we’ve received in Boston media.

Our non-alcoholic beverages get some praise from Genevieve Rajewski in the Boston Globe‘s “Creative and booze-free, mocktails are taken seriously.

Our Chemex Coffee Service (with Counter Culture Coffee) gets a nod in Boston Magazine‘s “Change a-Brewin’.”

The Boston Phoenix named of “Restaurant of the Year!”

Mc Slim JB’s Boston Dining Awards in Stuff Magazine are a favorite of ours every year for creative naming and awards, as well as an incredibly distinguished list of awardees. 2011 saw Journeyman (& nascent backbar) win the “Book of Job” award for surviving a car crash and coming out just as determined as ever.

Journeyman was featured in the Improper Bostonian article A New Standard: Tastemakers Prove that Remakes can Beat Originals by Kyle Wright. For the article, the Improper had local chefs reinvent Boston classics. Journeyman’s task was clam chowder. You can find the recipe for an improved briny + bacony clam chowder at the end of the article.

Robert Nadeau gave us 3.5 stars in his Boston Phoenix review “Serious Seasonal Eating That’s Well Worth the Effort” saying “There are no journeymen at the Journeyman. The trio behind this restaurant are clearly master craftspeople in the combination of molecular and locavore gastronomy they are doing.”

The Improper Bostonian awarded Journeyman a “Best of Boston 2011” award for “Rising Stars.”

Sarah Dwyer covered our Saturday BBQs for the Improper Bostonian in the Impulses section called “Crashed Landing: Shades of Graze.”

Stuff Magazine featured Diana & Tse Wei on the cover of their Food Issue, and Scott Kearnan interviewed Diana for his cover article “Meat your Makers:Vetting animal farms where Boston restaurants get their grub”

Devra First gave Journeyman a coveted spot in the Boston Globe‘s “Boston’s Best New Restaurant” list for the Summer Food issue.

Thanks to the readers of the Boston Phoenix, Journeyman was declared the Best New Restaurant of 2011!

Danielle Drellinger mentions Diana & our Saturday lunch BBQ in her Boston Globe article on Somerville and the food truck movement called “Somerville Scene: We Need More Food Trucks!

We got a brief shout-out alongside some of our favorite restaurants in the Improper Bostonian‘s piece “Recipe for Success,” which tells the story of opening new restaurants in Boston’s uncertain economy.

Luke ONeil tells the story of our milk punch over at Stuff Magazine‘s Liquid column in a short piece called “Got Milk Punch?

B.N. Lee gave us a glowing and insightful review over at the Improper Bostonian that calls out the Art and Craft of the Journeyman experience, saying “On their website, Journeyman’s owners play up their amateur culinary backgrounds by emphasizing their academic ones, but make no mistake: They know what they’re doing. Open-minded diners are in for a captivating experience.”

Corby Kummer reviewed us for Boston Magazine, probably our harshest review to date, but even so, he loved some of the food & closed with: “All that said, there’s more than good will and a keen sense of style at work at Journeyman. The room is cool but comfortable, the window garden lovely to see, and the staff believers in the mission. Kudajarova is a terrific bread baker, specializing in the dark and whole-grain loaves of her childhood in Latvia. The chefs are good with pickles and, often, meat. They obviously like cooking and have put their heart into the restaurant. “

Diana & Meg were included in Stuff Magazine‘s article “Knightesses of the Round Table: words of wisdom from women in Boston’s restaurant industry;” there are some cute photos and great quotes from them and they had a blast getting to spend time with so many talented women from other restaurants.

The Tablet published a review of Beyond Bubbie’s Kitchen called “Brisket Power” by Joan Nathan which includes some great praise from a talented cook and author for Diana & Tse Wei.

We made it on to several 2010 reviews:
Stuff Magazine‘s “Ultimate Food Coma: The 25 best things we ate this year” listed our seasonal salad;
The Boston Globe‘s “The Year in Taste” praises the squash with clams and seaweed; and their “Best of the New: Food” calls us out, as well.

Our Boston Globe review came out on December 22, 2010. Devra First gave us 2.5 stars, saying: “At its pinnacle, their food amazes, delicious and different, whimsical and beautiful, ever thoughtful. …the flavors are unexpected, the textures exciting. It has the element of “huh, whodathunkit’’ surprise that characterizes much of Journeyman’s food.”

Diana & Tse Wei are now blogging for Public Radio Kitchen, supplying a short story from the front lines as often as they can:
rebuilding the restaurant after a car crash,
hear how the chefs conceive of dessert dishes,
a story about our menu for Valentine’s Day,
getting our Boston Globe review,
and realizing that we’d actually opened a restaurant.

Ben Whelan over at the Weekly Dig wrote a charming little piece about us, & sums our philosophy up very well with a little quote from Diana: “we do try to do interesting things,” says the chef, “we always put a much higher value on taste than being shocking or ostentatious.”

Adam Bezigian over at Post Somerville gave us an absolutely glowing review, saying that “Journeyman restaurant in Union Square is peerless and righteous, comfortable and complete.”

Boston Magazine threw us a little praise and a nice picture in their November issue of “Table Talk.”

We appeared
in the Zagat Buzz at the end of our 11th week, not quite the newest in their “new openings” section, but we’re in great company with Bondir, Cognac, and more.

The Improper Bostonian, ran a great little piece on us featuring a great photo of Diana & Tse Wei at work and a few quotes from Meg. It’s not available on the Web, but we’ve loved the positive feedback we’ve received from its publication.

NECN’s TV Diner with Billy Costa featured us on November 13, 2010 as one of their top destinations. You can catch shots of our dining room, food, and location in their beautifully edited clip here.

Mc SlimJB gave us a blush-worthy review in Stuff Magazine, saying “Journeyman’s accomplishment is breathtaking and original: serving locally focused, exactingly sourced cuisine of exceptional refinement and technique in a package utterly free of ostentation. That might just be the shape of fine dining to come.”

Stuff Magazine gave us their “Biggest Balls” award for “debuting in a hard-as-a-speakeasy-to-find, loft-like space in Union Square, Somerville, a neighborhood that has long seemed an uncomfortable fit for fine dining. Another high hurdle might be a relatively novel format of three-, five-, and seven-course set menus for its locally sourced, artisan-technique-heavy, nose-to-tail New American cuisine at not-cheap prices.” Thanks, guys!!!

The Boston Globe ran a series of articles about our opening, all of which can still be read online:

Boston Magazine
also did a piece about our use of social media. We apologize for the degree of meta.

In addition, we have received brief coverage in DailyCandy, Grubstreet, Thrillist, and more.
